Female Incontinence

Urinary incontinence in women is surprisingly common, affecting almost a quarter of the adult female population. Caused by injury to, or weakness in, the pelvic muscles, urinary incontinence tends to afflict women more acutely during and after pregnancy but is also a common complaint among younger women and girls, particularly those who participate in sports or other vigorous activities.

Basic types of incontinence include Stress Incontinence, characterized by an involuntary release of urine during strenuous activity, Urge Incontinence, in which you are unable to get to a bathroom in time to urinate, and Overflow Incontinence, in which the bladder never fully empties, causing untimely leakage and discomfort.

There are literally dozens of therapeutic, pharmaceutical and surgical methods for addressing female urinary incontinence, and depending on the factors affecting your condition. Your DVU urologist may recommend a combination of treatments to correct your incontinence.
